Westport breast cancer survivor rows with WeCanRow and participates in the XXXVIII Head Of The Charles® Regatta

October 4, 2002
Cambridge, MA - Westport resident Barbara Szefc will be rowing in the 38th Head of the Charles as a member of the WeCanRow breast cancer survivors’ boat. WeCanRow, a program teaching breast cancer survivors to row, is rowing in its third straight Head of the Charles. “I’m proud to be rowing with this group of women who’ve come through so much and are still pushing forward,” asserts Barbara Szecfc.

Barbara, a mother of two, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993. “I’d been having yearly mammograms since the age of 40,” she says, “My mother died of breast cancer at the age of 58, so I knew to be careful.” In March of the same year doctors performed a partial mastectomy and followed with six weeks of radiation. With the treatment over Barbara looked to get beyond the experience.

The successful retired CPA took a lesson from her two children and began rowing at the Saugatuck Rowing Club. “Both my children rowed, and daughter Jayme recently stroked the Notre Dame University varsity 8 at the NCAA Championships” Barbara says, adding quickly “the first year Notre Dame was ever invited.”
